I’m not saying I have bruised ribs, because I really don’t want to give my training partner an ego boost. But if one were to get hit hard hard in the ribs or abdominal area and is experiencing pain to breath deeply and/or is coughing up phlegm, there is a good chance that one’s ribs are bruised (if they are fractured….it won’t be a mystery, you’ll know).

With impact, your ribs themselves will push against the muscle wall that surrounds them and this is what causes the bruising. You can’t technically diagnose bruised ribs and there really is nothing you can do to speed the healing process except suck it up, reduce the inflammation (ice, Advil if you’re able) and avoid making it worse. Stay away from active movements and stretching for at least 48-72 hours.

If your rib injury is worse than a bruise and you’re suffering a fracture, there are a couple of things to look out for. When the ribs are fractured it is very painful to breath deeply so parts of the lungs can become collapsed (Atelectasis). Secretions can accumulate in these areas - if you’re coughing up phlegm constantly and for an extended period, you should consult with your doctor to make sure it is not the beginnings of an infection.

You should also follow your instinct to cough regularly. It’s going to hurt, but it will prevent secretions from pooling in the lung, which could cause pneumonia. Try holding a pillow tightly to your chest - this will help prevent further damage to your ribs and help with some of the pain.

The healing process for simple fractures to the rigs averages about 6-8 weeks to several months depending on the severity of the trauma. Play hard, be safe, have fun, see you on Facebook.

I get a lot of inquires on where to purchase stunt pads. When you’re starting your collection of pads, try to keep different scenarios in mind. Have a collection of softies and hards for different needs and make sure you buy as thin as possible so that they don’t show through your wardrobe (so basically don’t go to a Hockey supply store to buy your girdle and knees).

For my motorcycle pad resource, I love Moto Liberty in Dallas. They have a super comprehensive website, nice close-out deals, and always exceptional customer service. I usually bypass the online purchase and call them direct for more specific questions. Just picked up a new girdle and back protector today.

Asian Conan update - sound design stage

Posted in ASIAN CONAN, TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN 0'BRIEN on March 27th, 2010 by Steven

ASIAN CONAN UPDATE. Here’s a screen capture from the last edit session with Brad Schultz and Josh Simpson from Funny or Die (FOD). We’re just about there with a final cut and the boys are now focusing all next week on Sound Design and Special Effects (love me some slo-mo bullets). FOD has been pretty amazing in the energy and resources they’re putting into this - they’ve been treating this project more like a short film production than a quick sketch….so thanks for your patience everyone. It’ll be up soon.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, this is probably a pretty weird post for you to read. If you’d like, you can click to a background history of Asian Conan here.

If you’re not familiar with FOD, it’s the online comedy site founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Most recently they released the all-star Presidential Reunion directed by Ron Howard and starring Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Fred Armison, Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey, and Darrell Hammond.

Here are a couple of my other favorite FOD Exclusives:

Forehead Tittaes with Marion Cotillard

Between Two Ferns with Zack Galifianakis and Natalie Portman

Acting with James Franco: Sense Memory

Rachel Bilson’s deleted sex scene with Adam Scott

The 7 Principles of Bushido

Posted in OFF THE CLOCK, ZEN STORIES on March 24th, 2010 by Steven

My wife Nina recently found this amazing Japanese antique tray for a client. I begged her to keep it for our own collection, but her client had already seen and fallen in love with it, so I’ll have to be happy with this picture. The artwork depicts a single Samurai warrior fending off a dozen enemies with a tree trunk. I am assuming it represents the legendary lone Samurai, Miyamoto Musashi.

The image struck a chord with me because I feel the artist really captured the spirit of the Samurai. If you’re not already familiar with it, the code of Bushido is based on seven principles to guide a Samurai - the most prominent being honor.

Toshirō Mifune in Akira Kurasawa's "Seven Samurai"

These are time honored principles that continue to guide martial artists and men of honor today.

The 7 Principles of Bushido

1. Honor (Meiyo)

2. Duty & Loyalty (Chu)

3. Justice & Morality (GI)

4. Complete Sincerity (Makoto)

5. Polite Courtesy (Rei)

6. Compassion (Jin)

7. Heroic Courage (Yu)

Farmer Digonta Saikia shows a 'Bhut jolokia' or 'ghost chili' pepper plucked from his field in the northeastern Indian state of Assam. (AP Photo/Manish Swarup, File)

Not sure how I feel about this yet, but definitely thought it was interesting enough to post…

GAUHATI, India – The Indian military has a new weapon against terrorism: THE WORLD’S HOTTEST CHILI.

After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized “bhut jolokia,” or “ghost chili,” to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilize suspects, defense officials said Tuesday.

The bhut jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world’s spiciest chili. It is grown and eaten in India’s northeast for its taste, as a cure for stomach troubles and a way to fight the crippling summer heat.

It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness. Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, while jalapeno peppers measure anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000.

“The chili grenade has been found fit for use after trials in Indian defense laboratories, a fact confirmed by scientists at the Defense Research and Development Organization,” Col. R. Kalia, a defense spokesman in the northeastern state of Assam, told The Associated Press.

“This is definitely going to be an effective nontoxic weapon because its pungent smell can choke terrorists and force them out of their hide-outs,” R. B. Srivastava, the director of the Life Sciences Department at the New Delhi headquarters of the DRDO said.

Srivastava, who led a defense research laboratory in Assam, said trials are also on to produce bhut jolokia-based aerosol sprays to be used by women against attackers and for the police to control and disperse mobs.

Marathon Man

Posted in FITNESS & TRAINING TIPS on March 21st, 2010 by Steven

Congratulations Pops for completing your 8th marathon!

Today was the LA Marathon and I was shocked at how awesome my dad still looked at the 15th mile mark (Doheny an Burton Way in Beverly Hills) this afternoon.

[side note: It was also nice to seem some I'M WITH COCO runners out there representing with their shirts.]

Now 70, my dad started running Marathons at age 63…so no excuses for anyone out there who has been procrastinating on a fitness routine.

When most people think about running or starting a fitness routine, they immediately think of the weight loss benefits. But maintaining a regular exercise regime offer many other fringes that you may not have considered:

1. Sleep. Millions of people suffer from insomnia and other sleep related difficulties. Several studies have been able to successfully link a relationship between exercise and better sleep.

2. Mental Health. Hormones are released when we exercise, including endorphins. These endorphins help us manage stress, give us confidence and a sense of calm and occasionally provide a sense of euphoria. These same hormones have been studied and linked to reducing depression. But even without the chemicals released during exercise, exercise enables you to work out your angst, anger, frustration and fears by pounding the pavement, hitting the heavy bag, pedaling, or dancing until your mind is clear or just too tired to obsess anymore.

3. Slows Aging. Whether you’re 31 or 61 chances are you’re interested in retaining a youthful appearance and attitude. Exercise helps keep bones and muscles strong, which means you’ll be able to retain your youthful figure, exuberance, and endurance for years to come.

4. Cardiovascular Health. Heart disease and cardiovascular related illnesses are the single largest cause of death. Cardio exercise (running, biking, etc..) lowers blood pressure, helps your arteries maintain integrity and keeps your heart muscle strong and vital.

5. Sex. I knew this would get your attention. Several studies, including the kids at Harvard University, have found that people who exercise have more sex.

So instead of searching for “magic cures” on infomercials or dangerously experimenting with the newest pharmaceutical pill to fix your ailments…stop talking about it, stop complaining, quit making excuses, shut up, put on some shorts, have some fun, and sweat!

Be cool my babies…

Posted in STUNT SECRETS, TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN 0'BRIEN, WATCH SICK VIDEOS on March 18th, 2010 by Steven

Hopefully I didn’t show it, but this was a seriously extremely stressful moment for me. For my appearances on former Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Conan and I didn’t spend much rehearsal on our opening stunt bits and interaction so it would all be organic and fresh for the actual taping.

But the “main stunt” would always require rehearsal for obvious safety and insurance reasons. Rehearsal would start around 3pm and the actual taping would go at 5pm. So it’s all pretty run and gun after lunch with no cushion for error.

On this particular episode our “main stunt” was sliding Conan on his butt with the use of a high-powered wench pulling him through a cornucopia of funny props that Conan had specified (picket fence, chicken coop, guys walking with mirror, and giant bowling pin). As usual, I ran through this with my stunt crew the night before and everything was completely copacetic.

However, on the actual day we ran into major computer problems. The wench is operated by a laptop…and the laptop kept freezing on us. Of course this didn’t happen until Conan and his entire staff of writers and producers showed up for rehearsal…along with cameras rolling.

But Coco kept his cool and no one really freaked out (on the outside at least) although there was a very solid chance that the bit was about to be canceled. We got it to work once in rehearsal….and left it at that.

I assured everyone that we’d have the system figured out by showtime, and Conan and company decided to keep it on the books. But literally until the moment that I yelled action on the actual show, I had no idea if it was going to work or not.

Here’s some rare behind the scenes footage that Aaron Bleyaert had put up on his Tonight Show blog. There’s also footage somewhere in a hardrive of Aaron wearing a football helmet and me spin kicking him in the head…I hope that didn’t end up in NBC possession because Aaron sacrificed his neck for that shot.

You can also catch more behind the scenes on the ConanVids youtube channel. Not sure how long they’ll be up there for…so get em while they’re hot.

I’ll work on getting the actual show footage up here or on my Facebook page shortly.

Spot Training Myth Buster

Posted in FITNESS & TRAINING TIPS on March 16th, 2010 by Steven

[WARNING: Don't read this if you can't handle the truth about your fat].

The most common fitness question I’m asked from men and women is hands-down,“how do I get rid of these” (as they squeeze their love handles or outer thighs). Then they follow with, “What’s the best exercise I should be doing?”

Much of the frustration surrounding fat burning is due to misinformation and unrealistic expectations. You’re not going to like what I have to say now. But here goes…

Spot training for your abs or thighs (or any other body part for that matter) doesn’t work, it’s not possible, and if you’re reading an article about it in a magazine article, turn the page and go make yourself a healthy juice.

The fallacy of spot-training assumes that exercising certain muscles will burn fat off that area; it assumes that a magic sit up machine from an infomercial can get rid of your beer belly. Back in the day, it assumed that a vibrating stomach belt would do the trick.

Yes, you can certainly build muscle and tone in specific areas that you workout (vibrating stomach belts don’t count though). BUT, the only way you can actually burn fat in a specific area is to reduce your overall body fat by creating a calorie deficit. The healthiest way to do that is with consistent exercise (cardio, strength and flexibility workouts) and a healthy, low-calorie diet.

There’s no way around it, so stop looking for the miracle or the “right time” and just start.

4 foods with bad reps that deserve 2nd looks…

Posted in FITNESS & TRAINING TIPS, FOOD on March 14th, 2010 by Steven

I think that many health and fitness writers are pressured by their editors/publishers to come up with the “next” fad that they often get carried away and too absolute on what to eat or not eat.

Here are four foods that I think have gotten a bad reputation in the “diet world”, but that should actually have a place on your plate…

1. Peanut butter

Misconception: This creamy spread is an indulgence best enjoyed occasionally because it’s high in fat and calories.

Why it’s good for you:At least five major studies confirm that eating peanuts can lower risk for coronary heart disease. So it’s no leap to think that peanut butter confers the same benefits. “Suffice it to say that eating peanut butter or peanuts has been associated with lower total cholesterol, lower ldl or ‘bad’ cholesterol, and lower triglycerides, all of which are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk,” says Richard Mattes, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition at Purdue University.

Even better, these health benefits seem to occur without also promoting weight gain. One reason could be that peanut butter is a stick-to-the-ribs kind of food. When Mattes offered a group of volunteers seven different snack foods (including peanut butter, rice cakes, pickles, and almonds), study participants reported that peanut butter or peanuts were much more filling snacks than rice cakes or pickles and tamed hunger for much longer. Sure, peanut butter is high in fat and calories, but if a small amount can quell hunger, that might explain why dieters seem more satisfied with weight-loss plans that include the spread.

But dieting or not, Mattes says a tablespoon or two of peanut butter is all it takes to net a world of benefits for both the heart and waistline. And don’t obsess about peanut butter being a source of trans fats. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture finds no detectable trans fats in a standard 2 tablespoon serving. CookingLight.com: Nutrition faceoff: Peanut butter vs. cream cheese

2. Eggs

Misconception: Eggs are high in dietary cholesterol, so they don’t have a place in my heart-healthy diet.

Why they’re good for you: Eggs contain a variety of substances that appear to promote good health. Choline, a nutrient that is critical to brain function, is one example. Eggs, it seems, are one of the richest food sources of choline. Scientists at the University of North Carolina find adding choline to the diets of pregnant animals improves memory performance in their offspring. It may seem like a leap to apply this finding to people, but researchers are already encouraging pregnant women to eat eggs and other choline-rich foods (such as beef liver) during pregnancy.

Eggs are also being studied because they contain lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that may keep eyes healthy and ward off the leading cause of blindness, macular degeneration. A recent report in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that we look at the egg as a whole package: Eggs are inexpensive, contain the highest-quality protein on the planet, and are loaded with small amounts of vital nutrients, including folate, riboflavin, selenium, B12, and choline. At 75 calories apiece, eggs are also a nutrient-dense food that makes a smart and low-calorie contribution to any menu.

3. Avocado

Misconception: I shouldn’t eat avocados because they’re high in fat.

Why they’re good for you: A lot of attention centers on the fact that avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, the heart-healthy kind. Yet scientists are now more interested in the active compounds in avocados that might help prevent cancer. One recent study found that those compounds can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in the laboratory. While conducting the study, these researchers found avocados are loaded with a variety of antioxidants, including familiar disease-fighting compounds such as lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin E.

Another recently discovered benefit is that avocados help the body absorb phytochemicals from other foods. Researchers from Ohio State University recently reported that pairing avocados with salsa or salad allows for better absorption of antioxidants in those foods. The lycopene in tomatoes or the beta-carotene in carrots may be better absorbed if there’s a slice or two of avocado in the bowl. Scientists suspect that the fat content of avocados helps the body absorb these antioxidants. CookingLight.com: Good fats vs. bad fats

4. Mushrooms

Misconception: Mushrooms are a low-calorie food with little nutritional benefit.

Why they’re good for you: They may be 90 percent water and have only 18 calories per cup, but mushrooms are getting serious scientific attention. Laboratory reports and animal studies show that compounds in mushrooms may do everything from bolster immune function to suppress breast and prostate cancers to decrease tumor size. And now, Penn State researchers find that mushrooms, from the humble button to the giant portobello, harbor large amounts of an antioxidant called L-ergothioneine. The scientific buzz is that fungi, for the moment, are the only foods that contain this compound.

While scientists work to figure out how these findings will translate to dietary advice, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy mushrooms. Clare Hasler, Ph.D., a well-known expert in functional foods and executive director of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at the University of California, Davis, points out that mushrooms offer a healthy helping of the blood pressure- lowering mineral potassium. “Most people might be surprised to learn that while orange juice is touted as one of the highest potassium foods, one medium portobello mushroom actually has more potassium,” she says. “And five white button mushrooms have more potassium than an orange.”

This list is excerpted from Cooking Light magazine. By Maureen Callahan.
